“Tricky Tax Issues and Savvy Solutions”
This workshop was presented on July 18, 2011 by Laguna Beach Seniors and the
Laguna
Beach
Community
Foundation. This workshop will address how Laguna Beach Nonprofits can learn
how to avoid the pitfalls associated with:
Sales Tax,
Raffles, Lotteries, and Opportunity Drawings,
Unrelated Business Income,
Need for Bookkeeper Continuity, and a
Recap of 990 rules.
Robert Gamez, CPA, moderator, and a representative of the State Board of Equalization
will address these important issues. Robert, a Laguna Beach resident since 1969
and founder of his own CPA firm, has served on many Laguna Beach boards.

“Fund
Raising in the New Economy: How It's Done”
This workshop was presented on October 4, 2010 by Amanda J. Ferrari,
JD, CFRE, co-executive director of the Laguna Beach Community Foundation
with over 25 years of fundraising experience and a nationally recognized
leader in the nonprofit community; Bill Steel, JD, an attorney, long
time Laguna Beach resident, SchoolPower Board member and Chair of Community
Campaign for 10 years, Chair of Ocean Institute and Board member for
over 20 years,; Susan Miller Hoover, CFRE, Vice President, Major Gifts
at the Ocean Institute with over 25 years of fundraising experience.
The volunteer panel provided information on the importance of developing
and nurturing key relationships with donors. They discussed the important
role of the Board in fundraising and how to engage your board in the
process. There was information provided on the legal requirements for
raffles.
“Build
Your Grant Seeking Skills”
This workshop was presented on August 2, 2010 by Barbara McMurray, public
relations, grant and writing professional for nonprofits and for profit
organizations; Maya Dunne, a nationally recognized leader in the area
of nonprofit management, philanthropy and public sector initiatives
addressing community problems; and L.R. (Randy) Kraft, a communications
and development consultant for nonprofits with experience in writing
over 400 grants.
